A Daughter's Mission Against ALS

GRAPEVINE (CBSDFW.COM) - Alllie Grasshoff of Keller is only 13 years old but she is dealing with a difficult situation in a very mature way.

She's losing her dad to a terrible disease.

"It's really sad to know your dad or your mom or someone in your family is going through this," Allie said.

Her father Chris Porras was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis in April and is already walking with a cane.

There is no cure for the deadly disease that attacks the nerve cells and weakens the muscles.

But Allie is working to change that, even if it may be too late for her dad.

"It makes me feel great that I'm doing something important not only for just my dad but everyone diagnosed with ALS," Allie said.

She created Starlight-Fighting For The Cure and began selling wristbands and T-shirts  but she did not stop there.

Allie organized a music benefit and silent auction at the Chill Restaurant in Grapevine for Friday. The event aimed to raise awareness and donations to find a cure for ALS.

"I'm a proud father. She's my youngest. She's always been my baby. She's my best friend," Porras said. "There's a lot more things that 13 year old would rather be doing right now."

Allie simply does not want other children to go through what she's going through.

"I've told him I'm scared a lot but I just don't like to show I'm scared," Allie said.

Allie's mother Jennifer Grasshoff says her daughter wants to help others.

"She'd rather help other kids than sit and worry about her dad all the time," she said.

Allie believes the love she has for her own father can one day make difference for other families.

"My dad is one of the best people in my life," Allie  said. "I love him and care about him."
