38 Is More Like 30-Great!
Getting old sucks! There I finally said it. Bad back, achy knees, and calcium deposit on most of my joints. My friend Pauly has the same problem. In honor of getting one year older and wiser, I put together this list of all times greats and took a look at what they were up to when they turned the big 38.
Baseball
Pete Rose - Phillies
1979 - 163 Games .331 Batting Average 208 hits 4 HRS - 59 RBIS - *13th All Star Game
Retired in 1986 at the age of 46
Nolan Ryan - Astros
1985 - 10-12 3.80 ERA 208 K's - *7th All Star Game
After that season, Ryan went on to win 83 games before retiring in 1993 at the age of 46.
Paul Molitor - Blue Jays
1995 - .270 15 HRs. *but this season was sandwiched between two years where Molitor batted .341 in 96' and .341 in 97'
Ironically shares my birthday of 8-22. Molitor retired in 1998 at the age of 41. I met him once when he was a scout with the Twins and we shared drivers license photos. True story.
Basketball
Michael Jordan - Washington Wizards
2001-2002 - Played in 60 Games after being retired for 3 years. Scored only 1375 total points that season, 3rd lowest total in his career, averaging 23 points a game.
Retired for good at the age of 39
Football
Brett Favre - Green Bay Packers
2007 - 13 - 3 Record 4155 Passing Yards, 28 Touchdowns. 1-1 Playoff Record (Overtime loss to Giants in NFC Championship)
Played for three more seasons and retired at the age of 41 as a member of the Vikings. From 1993 to 2010 Favre didn't miss a start. That's remarkable!
