Dozens of parents showed up to the school board meeting requesting a district-wide mask mandate due to the COVID-19 surge in North Texas and beyond.
The network is "fully accredited by the TEA" and is available free to students in grades 3 through 12 who "live anywhere in the state."
August 10 marked the first day of the Dallas Independent School District's temporary mask mandate.
As of now, most school districts across the state are not offering this as an option because they would receive less funding per student from the state.
As COVID cases rise again, the topic of virtual learning is top on the minds of parents. This year, however, the online schooling option is not available at most schools.
One week after returning to school, Garland ISD is reporting 314 active cases of COVID-19 among students and staff.
"We know that the resurgence of COVID in our community has many of you very concerned for your students who are not yet eligible to receive the vaccine," Superintendent Dr. Jeannie Stone said in a recorded video message.
Chief Eddie Garcia, along with members of his command staff, encouraged the students and cheered them on to a successful school year.
The Dallas Independent School District will require that masks be worn on campuses beginning August 10.
Dallas ISD Superintendent Dr. Michael Hinojosa says while administrators can't make students wear masks, it is heavily encouraged in order to reduce the spread of COVID-19.
