The Fort Worth ISDs mask mandate was short-lived on Monday. Shortly after the policy went into effect an appeals court granted a temporary injunction preventing enforcement.
There is now an option for many independent school districts across Texas to have a virtual learning option. This after Governor Greg Abbott signed a bill into law expanding funding for online instruction.
The directive requires all staff, parents, students, and visitors to wear protective face masks at all Fort Worth ISD indoor facilities, absent a medical exemption.
Some officers with Grand Prairie PD made hundreds of students in the school district smile. The delight came with the delivery of free shoes and socks.
All classes and morning activities at North Forney High School and Smith Intermediate have been cancelled for Wednesday, September 8.
Some students will be returning to school from Labor Day weekend to classrooms with new mask mandates in place.
Brentfield Elementary School in Richardson ISD has 24 active positive cases and has had 36 since school began on Aug. 17.
Without disclosing why the decision was made, GCISD shared a list of concerns that did not lead to district leaders' decision to put Whitfield on leave.
A spokesperson for the district says masks are requested for students and staff, but not required due to legal reasons.
"As this is an ongoing personnel matter, we will not comment further," the school district said Monday.
During the special meeting, parents headed to the podium clearly divided on whether or not masks help prevent the spread of COVID-19.
Across North Texas, school districts saw more students struggle when COVID-19 forced classrooms to close, especially in math.
The Fort Worth ISD Board has approved a temporary virtual learning option for students who have been unable to return to school due to a documented medical condition.
During the hearing, Dallas ISD Superintendent Dr. Michael Hinojosa gave most of the provisions of the bill the thumbs up. "I am in support of Senate Bill 15."
The 2021-2022 school year started on Wednesday, Aug. 11. That week, the district reported 24 positive cases on school campuses. The next week, that number rose to 276.
