All classes and morning activities at North Forney High School and Smith Intermediate have been cancelled for Wednesday, September 8.
Some students will be returning to school from Labor Day weekend to classrooms with new mask mandates in place.
Brentfield Elementary School in Richardson ISD has 24 active positive cases and has had 36 since school began on Aug. 17.
Without disclosing why the decision was made, GCISD shared a list of concerns that did not lead to district leaders' decision to put Whitfield on leave.
A spokesperson for the district says masks are requested for students and staff, but not required due to legal reasons.
"As this is an ongoing personnel matter, we will not comment further," the school district said Monday.
