The Nebraska Republican would leave his Senate seat several years early for the post.
According to an FBI affidavit, investigators found "a roll of tape, white rope, one hammer, one pair of rubber and cloth gloves, and a journal" in suspect David DePape's backpack.
The former president is appearing in Michigan, Wisconsin, Arizona, Georgia and other battleground states.
Two sources tell CBS News a hammer was used by the assailant to break into Pelosi's home. The House speaker was not there at the time, according to her office.

The panel demands documents from Trump by Nov. 4 and "one or more days" for a deposition under oath "on or about" Nov. 14.
But if Donald Trump is the GOP nominee, Mike Pompeo says he'd vote for Trump with "no hesitation."
It's unlikely Democrats, who already hold House and Senate majorities, will win enough seats to do this.
