One family had to give up their dreams of an organic farm in Maine after discovering the land they bought had been contaminated years earlier.
A recent study has found that freshwater fish contaminated with toxic PFAS, also known as "forever chemicals," have been found in nearly every state. PFAS are linked to a host of health issues, including cancer and liver problems. Roxana Saberi reports.
There are no levels of exposure considered safe from health effects.
The full health risks of wearing apparel made with PFAS, also known as "forever chemicals," are still unknown. But states are taking action so clothing makers will remove them.
"They're 100 feet away from families who don't have access to clean drinking water," one local told CBS News. "And there you see the dichotomy of the haves and the have-nots."
The Environmental Protection Agency Wednesday proposed limits on six "forever chemicals" in drinking water. The compounds are given the term "forever chemicals" because they do not break down.
A train derailed in Nebraska early Tuesday, according to Union Pacific Railroad. About 31 cars carrying coal derailed in Gothenburg, Nebraska, the railroad said in a statement to CBS News.
Researchers say it's the equivalent of drinking a month's worth of water contaminated with toxic "forever chemicals" known as PFAS.
Studies show that PFAS can lead to cancer or other health issues, including damage to the liver or thyroid gland.
