Woman Burned In Pleasanton House Fire Accused Of Arson
PLEASANTON (AP) – An East Bay woman severely burned in a fire that destroyed her home is accused of setting the fire herself just before she was to be evicted.
Deonna Zuffa is charged with arson and other crimes in the 2008 fire that also damaged two neighbors' homes in Pleasanton.
She did not enter a plea in a Thursday court appearance and was referred to the public defender's office.
The Contra Costa Times reports that the 42-year-old was found lying in the street with her shoes and clothes still in flames. She suffered severe burns over 60 percent of her body.
Court documents say that the home was in foreclosure and eviction was pending.
Zuffa's husband told police he was not aware of the couple's financial straits because his wife handled the finances.
