USF To Support Threatened Low-Income College Prep Program
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS/AP) -- The Universityof San Francisco will continue to sponsor a civil rights-era college prep program that was in danger of going away after 45 years at the school's campus.
USF officials have agreed to support Upward Bound's application for $1 million in federal funding.
The university had said earlier it could no longer support the program because it needed more classroom space for its growing student body.
Upward Bound serves nearly 200 low-income students atSan Francisco high schools through a residential summer program at USF and tutoring year-round.
Under the new deal, USF has agreed to help the program find space off-campus.
The deal came after protests, including a march, by students and Upward Bound officials.
