Unique Program Helps SJ City Employees Go Solar

SAN JOSE, Calif. (KCBS) - You could call it one of the best deals under the sun for city employees in San Jose. They're being offered low cost loans to go solar.

The San Jose Credit Union is offering city employees and retirees the low interest loans. "It's a great way to do things that people are interested in, to be more green, to reduce dependence on foreign oil, and to have a flat rate for electricity for a long period of time. With some of these agreements you can fix your energy costs and that's a big plus to people," offered San Jose Mayor Chuck Reed. "And you can basically do it for no money."

As a city employee, Reed of course would qualify for the program, but he won't need to take advantage of it. "No, this doesn't help me at all because I've already got a solar system on my house, I have installed that last year, I use a power purchase agreement," he explained. "There are ways to do this with no money down."
