UC Berkeley Professor Killed In Crash With Dump Truck

BERKELEY (CBS SF) -- A bicyclist was killed in downtown Berkeley Friday afternoon in a collision with a dump truck, police said.

The 65-year-old Berkley resident was found lying in the roadway on Bancroft Way west of Fulton Street at 3:38 p.m.

The Alameda County coroner's bureau identified him as Shlomo Bentin.

Bentin was treated by paramedics and taken to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

The driver of the dump truck left the scene unaware of the collision, but returned when a passing motorist alerted him to what happened.

Police said the driver cooperated with the investigation and was not arrested.

Bentin was a prominent professor of psychology and education at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in Israel.

He frequently lectured at the University of California at Berkeley and conducted research experiments there, publishing several papers collaborating with UC Berkeley professors.

In 2012, he was awarded the Israel Prize for Psychology.
