Transbay Terminal Gets a Temporary Home

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)_ Big changes are in store for commuters who use San Francisco's decades old Transbay Bus Terminal next week.

Buses will have to be picked up at a temporary location just a couple of blocks away from the old Transbay Terminal.

Construction crews are still putting the finishing touches on the temporary terminal bounded by Howard, Folsom, Main, and Beale streets.

Turning left will be problematic on some of those streets for motorists as some of the far left lanes will be for buses and taxis.

Commuters are going to have to look when it comes to finding their bus stops.  Some will be on the property; others will be outside on the street.

AC Transit and Greyhound will take up most of the space on the property with Muni, Golden Gate, SamTrans, and WestCat that goes to west Contra Costa County, scattered on the street.

It's going to take some getting used to and unlike the old terminal, this temporary facility will not have that much cover from the elements.

Phillip Sandri of the Transbay Joint Powers Authority says some provisions have been made.

"We actually designed canopy structures for the passengers.  They're designed per AC Transits requirements.  We try to cover the passenger as they enter the bus. We also have wind screens to help block the wind as passengers are waiting," said Sandri.

This new $18 million terminal will be used while the $4 billion project to rebuild the old terminal goes on for seven years.

Officials are holding an open house Tuesday afternoon to show commuters how to get around the new temporary terminal.
