SAN RAFAEL (KCBS) - A teenager held at Marin County Juvenile Hall for allegedly stealing celebrity chef Guy Fieri's Lamborghini was apparently the intended target of an attempted break-in at the facility, according to Sheriff's officials.
Max Wade was scheduled to be transferred to the county jail Friday morning, on the day he turned 18. Wade has pleaded not guilty to stealing Fieri's bright yellow Lamborghini from a San Francisco dealership last year. He is also being charged separately with attempted murder for allegedly shooting into an occupied vehicle in Mill Valley in April.
The attempted break-in was an attempt to free Wade, sheriff's Lt. Barry Heying said. It happened around 4:30 a.m. at the juvenile hall facility at 16 Jeannette Prandi Way in unincorporated Marinwood.
Staffers reported hearing "thumping" noises on the walls before dawn, alerting the Sheriff's Department at around 4:30 a.m. that there was a security breach on the southeast wall of the campus.
It appears that one or more individuals had used bolt cutters to get through a fence line, ultimately reaching a secured perimeter right next to one of the buildings, which is made entirely out of concrete. Authorities believe the "thumping" noises staffers heard were attempts by the suspect or suspects to create a hole into an occupied cell.
A sledgehammer was recovered from the scene, as was a backpack with bolt cutters inside. Multiple agencies, including the California Highway Patrol, participated in the search for suspects though none were initially captured.
KCBS' Holly Quan Reports:
Staff moved the fewer than 20 inmates nearest the incident to a building elsewhere on the Juvenile Hall campus.
All of the inmates were accounted for and were being interviewed by investigators.
Wade was scheduled to be moved later Friday morning to county jail, but instead was moved there immediately after the attempted break-in, Heying said.
