Tech Reports: Legislation To Censor The Internet Stalls

Thursday PM | 09/30/2010

Legislation that could have censored part of the internet to users in the U.S. appears to have stalled. KCBS Technology Analyst Larry Magid says the internet censorship bill is delayed, for now.

The Combating Online Infringements and Counterfeits Act had bipartisan support from the Senate, and the House and from members of the Chamber of Commerce. It would have given the Dept. of Justice the authority to serve a website with a subpoena to shut down access.

KCBS Technology Analyst Larry Magid Reporting:

This would mean that U.S. users wouldn't be able to see some overseas sites if they sold content that was illegal here, for instance. But critics of the bill say that it is tantamount to China blocking sites, which the U.S. is against.
