Supervisors Reach Agreement With Redwood City Over New Jail Site

REDWOOD CITY (BCN) -- The San Mateo County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday moved closer to designating a site to develop a proposed new jail that would replace an existing facility in Redwood City.

At a Tuesday morning morning, the board voted unanimously to enter into a non-binding agreement with the Redwood City that indicates the county's interest in acquiring six privately owned parcels for the proposed jail on Chemical Way on the east side of U.S. Highway 101.

Redwood City's City Council approved the agreement on Nov. 22.

The new jail would include beds to accommodate more than 700 inmates and would alleviate overcrowding at the county's existing facilities, according to the sheriff's office.

The sheriff's office is scheduled to present an initial study on the suitability of the jail replacement project on Chemical Way at the Board of Supervisors meeting on Dec. 14.
