'Speed Freak Killer' Claims 14 Bodies Hidden In Lake County

SAN QUENTIN (CBS SF) -- Convicted serial killer Wesley Shermantine has claimed the remains of 14 murder victims are hidden in the Cow Mountain Recreation Area of Lake and Mendocino Counties according to published reports.

Lake County Sheriff's officials were investigating the statements made by one of the notorious 'Speed Freak Killers,' but were skeptical of the claim, according to reports in the Press Democrat and San Jose Mercury News.

Shermantine, 46 and a friend, Loren Herzog were convicted of a drug-fueled killing spree between 1994 and 1998. The pair were arrested in 1999. Shermantine was convicted of killing four people, but authorities believe there are many more victims in California. Shermantine claims Herzog killed over 70 people, but maintains his own innocence.

Shermantine made reference to the 14 bodies in a letter written to Assemblywoman Cathleen Galgiani, D-Stockton. Galgiani authored a bill, signed into law last week by Governor Brown that will allow Shermantine to accompany authorities when they search for more victims in San Joaquin County.
