SJ Mayor Wants Ballot Measure on A's Stadium

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) _ San Jose Mayor Chuck Reed wants to put an Oakland A's stadium measure on the ballot even though Major League Baseball has yet to decide whether the team can move to his city.

The mayor said on Thursday he will ask the City Council to approve a ballpark measure for the November ballot. The announcement marked a change in Reed's position. He has previously said that he could not proceed with the ballot measure until baseball officials reached their decision or A's owner Lew Wolff gave the go-ahead.

The Athletics need the approval of baseball and other team owners to move to San Jose because the San Francisco Giants hold territorial rights to the area.

Wolff on Thursday welcomed the decision.

But a Giants' spokeswoman called it "inappropriate" given that baseball officials have yet to complete their analysis.
