SJ Continues Negotiations with Firefighters Union

Negotiations between San Jose and its firefighters union are set to resume Wednesday afternoon. The renewed talks follow the layoff of 49 firefighters over the weekend.

Union president Randy Sekany is hopeful that the resumption in face-to-face negotiations will lead to the re-hiring of at least some of those who were laid off.

"San Jose Firefighters' latest proposal we think has the capability of providing some solid economic resources to hire back these 49 guys that were let go over the weekend," said Sekany.

However, San Jose Mayor Chuck Reed disagrees.

"I'm not optimistic because we've been negotiating with our firefighters for a very long time and we have very little movement," said Reed. "We'll continue to talk, but the amount of money that they've been willing to put on the table in the way of concessions, is not enough to reinstate all of the firefighters who have been laid off."

However, the city council unanimously approved an agreement with the POA avoiding police layoffs in San Jose.
