Cable Car Accident Victim Who Sued SF Muni After Developing Nymphomania Now Subject Of Local Musical
An upcoming musical in San Francisco might have the strangest (true) back story you've ever heard.
In the 1970s, a 29-year-old woman named Gloria Sykes sued Muni for $500,000 (roughly $3.1 million today) for a head accident on a Hyde street cable car that turned her into a nymphomaniac. The widely publicized event and ensuing court battle brought in psychiatrists and the woman's lovers to testify on her behaviors, and—as might only happen in San Francisco—she won her case.
Now, the producers and writers at FOGG Theatre have turned the story into a musical that sets Sykes' tale against the actual surrounding events of the 1970s sexual revolution in San Francisco. Most importantly, it asks the question, "What happens when women want the kind of things women aren't supposed to want?"
Created by Kirsten Guenther and Tony Asaro, who found the story, the show is finally headed to stage this month at Z Below in San Francisco.
