SF Board Of Supes Proposes 'Local-Hire' Legislation For City Construction Projects
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- San Francisco officials are considering legislation that would require that at least 50 percent of the workers hired to work on city projects would have to be San Francisco residents.
The Board of Supervisors is expected to vote Tuesday on the so-called "local-hire" rules.
If approved, the new rules would be phased in. The first year there would be a requirement that 25 percent of the workers hired by contractors and subcontractors would have to live in San Francisco.
Then every year the minimum would increase by 5 percent, until it hits the 50 percent requirement after six years.
If the board does approve the new hiring rules, it's not known if Mayor Gavin Newsom would veto the legislation.
