Schwarzenegger's Portrait With Erased Image Of Estranged Wife Maria Shriver Goes Up At State Capitol

SACRAMENTO (CBS SF) — The portrait of former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger will be hung alongside past governors at the state Capitol nearly three months after it was unveiled with an alteration -- the removal of an image of his estranged wife Maria Shriver.

Brian Ferguson, a spokesman for the California Department of General Services, said Schwarzenegger's portrait will be placed Friday morning on the third floor of the Capitol.

The photograph-like portrait by Austrian artist Gottfried Helnwein features a youthful Schwarzenegger standing in front of the state seal and a visible smudge on the left lapel which once featured a button showing the face of wife Maria Shriver. When the portrait was unveiled in September, that part had been noticeably painted over.

A few months after Schwarzenegger left office in 2011, he and Shriver separated after 25 years of marriage. Days later it was revealed Schwarzenegger had fathered a son 14 years earlier during an ongoing affair he had with his household maid.
