Schwarzenegger will be joined in China by leaders of the Bay Area Council, a business lobbying group that plans to lead the effort for a national bid. They say the event could benefit the region for decades.
The World Expo, formerly known as the World's Fair, is held every five years, and will take place in Milan in 2015.
The Bay Area hosted it twice in San Francisco, once on Treasure Island in 1940, and in the Marina District in 1915.
Official bids for the 2020 expo will probably be made next year.
