San Jose's Homicide Rate Drops Remarkably

SAN JOSE (KCBS) - The Bay Area's three largest cities all saw drops in violent crime in 2010, but the trend is most notable in San Jose, which is aiming to close the year with the lowest number of homicides in more than two decades. The 20 homicides in the city reflects the lowest recorded number since at least 1989.

"Last year in 2009 we had 28," said San Jose Acting Police Chief Chris Moore. "We've been hovering in the high twenties and low thirties over the last several years, which is down from a high of sixties and seventies in the mid 1980s."

KCBS' Mike Colgan Reports:

It wasn't just murder rates that were down in 2010, however. Moore said that robberies were down, along with aggravated assaults.

While Oakland has seen about 90 homicides, which is down 14 people from last year, San Francisco has about the same number as last year, which is in the mid forties.
