San Jose Police Officer Opens Fire On Armed Burglary Suspect
SAN JOSE (CBS SF) -- A suspected armed burglar who was shot at by a San Jose police officer after attempting to enter a home early Wednesday morning has been identified as 36-year-old Shannon Nathan Wong, a police spokesman said.
Shortly before 1 a.m., an officer responded to a report of a person trying to break into a home in the 300 block of Bautista Place, just south of West San Carlos Street, police spokesman Officer Albert Morales said.
The officer arrived at the home, where he found the suspect later identified as Wong at the front door, Morales said.
Wong was dressed in military-style clothing and armed with an assault rifle, Morales said.
Wong allegedly aimed the rifle at the officers, who were making verbal commands to him. One of the officers then shot at the suspect, who was not struck, according to Morales.
None of the officers were injured, he said.
The suspect then went inside the home but later complied with officers, Morales said.
Officers later found an AR-15 rifle and Colt 1911 handgun, both loaded, in the suspect's possession, Morales said.
Wong was arrested and booked into Santa Clara County Jail, where he is being held without bail.
The officer who fired at Wong has worked 17 years with the Police Department and was placed on administrative leave, Morales said.
Today's incident marks the second officer-involved shooting this week in San Jose. On Monday, an armed suspect who took a woman hostage was fatally shot while exchanging gunfire with police outside a Cambrian neighborhood home. Police found the hostage dead inside the residence soon after the shooting, Morales said.
This year, San Jose police have had 11 officer-involved shootings, six of which were fatal.
