San Francisco police said two of their officers were suddenly attacked while sitting in a patrol car Tuesday afternoon.

The two officers were in a patrol car, near O'Farrell and Polk streets. Police said, just before 4 p.m., a man opened the driver's door and began attacking them without provocation.

Other police units responded to the scene and helped detain the man.

"An unprovoked attack like this on our officers is unacceptable, and the SFPD will do everything within our power to hold this perpetrator accountable. These officers — who show valor every day — are thankfully recovering at the hospital," said Police Chief William Scott.

The two officers who were attacked were taken to the hospital for injuries that were not life-threatening.

Police said there are charges pending.
