San Francisco Mayor Shows Top Transportation Official Three Major Projects

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)- San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee is stepping up his campaign to nail down federal transit funding for a number of big projects. Lee's hands on approach to selling San Francisco included a bit of a show and tell to the U.S. Deputy Transportation Secretary.

The week after becoming mayor, Lee was in Washington for the mayor's conference and also to visit the Transportation Secretary to talk over funding for projects back home.

Mayor Lee took Deputy Transportation Secretary John Porcari on a personal tour of Doyle Drive, Hunter's Point and the Central Subway project.

KCBS' Barbara Taylor Reports:

"He sees people working; he sees that everything that had been told to him by reports is actually real," said Lee in reference to Porcari.

Normally federal transit funding would be quietly embedded in a bill, related or not, by congressional representatives, but earmarks are gone and that means Mayor Lee has to work harder to keep the dollars flowing to Doyle Drive, the Central Subway and Hunter's Point.

"Now we carry forth the real work and all of the promises and all the expectations they built. We proved [to] them that we deliver," said Lee.
