San Francisco Gay & Lesbian Bookstore Set To Close Down

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- A beloved bookstore in the heart of San Francisco's gay and lesbian community is set to close by the end of the month.

A Different Light bookstore opened in the Castro district in 1985 and soon became a social hub that celebrated gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered writers and readers.

The bookshop often hosted art shows, reading groups and community events, including an appearance by Olympic diver Greg Louganis, who drew a block-long crowd when promoting his autobiography.

A bookshop manager said sales will determine the store's final day.

The Northern California Booksellers Association's executive director said online book sales have prompted the demise of many gay bookstores. The association said the store is likely the state's last gay bookshop selling new titles.
