SF Supes Consider Resolution To Save KUSF Radio
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) – The San Francisco Board of Supervisors has now been asked to weigh in on the sale of radio station KUSF by the University of San Francisco.
Last week, the lights went out on the nationally recognized station, which has been a fixture at the university for 33 years.
Students were told that a new station would return online. The sale prompted a community and student protest and station volunteer Irwin Swirnoff has asked the board to get involved.
"The spot on the dial is a limited public resource that really belongs to the community," he said. "For USF to go behind the back of the community is really a disservice to the community."
KCBS' Barbara Taylor Reports:
But university spokesman Gary McDonald said the station was sold because only a few students were involved.
"One of the things that we're going to do is emphasize the student experience," he said. "As we take KUSF online at KUSF.org, it will be the students we're going to concentrate on."
The resolution by Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi asks the University of San Francisco to cancel the sale and asks the Federal Communications Commission not to allow the license transfer to new owners.
