REDWOOD CITY (AP) -- A report on a development plan for the former site of a salt production area on the edge of San Francisco Bay said thousands of cars could be added to an already crowded freeway during rush-hour.

The preliminary report issued by Redwood City's hired consultants for the so-called Saltworks project found that the homes, schools and office spaces proposed as part of the project would send up to 7,000 cars onto a stretch of Highway 101 during the morning and evening commutes.

The public is expected to voice concerns at a meeting Wednesday night in Redwood City, where planning officials will be discussing the traffic impacts of the development.

The developer, DMB Associates, say they do not believe the Saltworks project will greatly impact traffic, claiming that many of the expected new residents are commuters already coming into Redwood City for work.
