Poll Shows San Jose Residents Would Consider New Taxes

SAN JOSE (AP) -- A poll on San Jose's budget woes shows residents are willing to consider new taxes.

Fairbank, Maslin, Maullin, Metz and Associates, hired by the city, surveyed 903 San Jose adults by telephone from Jan. 13 to Jan. 20 and found residents still favor cuts in employee compensation over reducing city services or raising taxes.

But the polling firm's Davis Metz indicated that residents are warming to the idea of new tax measures, saying the reality of the city's budget situation may be sinking in.

The City Council unanimously accepted the survey report on Tuesday. The council made no move, however, to pursue a new tax measure.

San Jose is facing a $110 million shortfall in the next budget, which must be adopted in June.
