A Fremont police spokesman identified the suspect as 20-year-old Andrew Barrientos of Union City, who fled in a stolen 1999 4-door, green Mazda with California license plate 4MJE548.
Authorities say Barrientos is a wanted felon who fled to a nearby liquor store after the shooting, then carjacked a vehicle after shooting at the driver. The driver was not hit by gunfire, but was hit by broken glass.
Authorities say the Fremont officer was working alongside other members of a multi-agency task force.
Police searched through the night for the suspect, who is described as armed and dangerous.
The 39-year-old officer is married with two children. His surgery required 60 units of blood and he's expected to require additional procedures within the next few days.
Anyone wishing to donate blood is asked to contact The American Red Cross (800-448-3543) or their local blood bank, and request to donate in the name of Officer Todd Young. Blood type is not critical.
