Pittsburg Police Arrest Man Accused Of Shooting At Officer

PITTSBURG (CBS 5) -- Police in Pittsburg arrested a man Tuesday accused of opening fire on an officer, following a manhunt that took several hours.

According to police, the driver of a Cadillac ran a stop sign and refused to pull over around 5:30 p.m. The driver led the officer on a short chase, which ended when the car crashed into a retaining wall near Atlantic and Railroad Avenues.

Following the crash, police say the driver fired several shots at the police cruiser. The officer returned fire and hit the shooter in the leg, before running off.

The officer was not hurt and was wearing a bulletproof vest at the time of the shooting.

Police set up a perimeter around a nearby neighborhood and determined the suspected gunman was holed up in a friend's home. Around 9:45 p.m. the suspect emerged from the home and was arrested.

Authorities identify the suspect as 27-year-old Dyrell Wayne Jones of Pittsburg. According to police, Jones was on parole for armed robbery. He is facing several charges, including attempted murder.
