Phil Matier: Oakland Police Department Could Be Headed For Federal Takeover

OAKLAND (KCBS) – The Oakland Police Department could be headed for a future federal takeover, that according to a federal court appointed monitor looking into the department's reform efforts.

In his latest report, monitor Robert Warshaw called the 10-year-old reform effort "almost stagnant" and among the new problems were the way the department handled the Occupy protests and officer-involved shootings in the city.

KCBS, CBS 5 and Chronicle Insider Phil Matier:

City leaders don't agree with the assessment as Oakland Mayor Jean Quan said a federal takeover was "not an option" and the city has made significant progress since Warshaw's last report.

Oakland Police Chief Howard Jordan said the department continues to make progress in many areas in it's effort to be in full compliance.

You can hear Phil Matier's comments Monday through Friday at 7:50am and 5:50pm on KCBS All News 740AM and 106.9FM.
