OPD Layoff Negotiations Continue

OAKLAND, Calif. (KCBS/AP) _ Oakland city officials and police union leaders are still negotiating to prevent 80 officers from being laid off. The two sides concluded talks Monday and plan to meet again Tuesday.

The cuts would impact nearly 10 percent of the city's 776 officers in one of the nation's most crime-ridden cities.

City officials have clarified the specific deadline for the layoffs, while warning that the change is not an extension based on progress at the bargaining table.

City leaders want officers to pay 9 percent of their salary towards pension benefits. Along with that, Oakland is offering a no-layoff guarantee until November, but the police union wants no job cuts for three years.

Despite the differences, Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums says he's hopeful a deal can be reached.

"We've agreed that we won't negotiate in the public, so I continue to be optimistic that we'll somehow find a way, and we still have some time to do that," said Dellums.
