1-Year-Old Critical, 6 Others Hurt In Oakland Shooting During Video Production
OAKLAND (CBS SF) -- A one-year-old child was in critical condition and six other people hurt in a multiple shooting Monday night in West Oakland during the production of a rap video, police said.
The shooting was reported shortly after 6 p.m. in the parking lot of a liquor store near Seventh and Willow Streets.
All of the victims—including at least one woman and a child—were taken to hospitals before officers arrived, according to police.
Witnesses described a chaotic scene. One man who claimed to have heard 30-40 bullets fired said it was like a "war zone".
Just before the shots were fired, a rapper by the name of Kafani was making a music video at the scene when tempers flared, according to police. A promotional van owned by Kafani was riddled with bullets, but hours after the shooting, a post on Kafani's Twitter feed denied the rapper was making a video.
In other posts, Kafani said he was not shot and the fact that one of his promo vans involved doesn't mean he was there, since he drives a Bentley.
Other tweets indicated the 1-year-old victim was a cousin of the rapper.
KCBS' Chris Filippi Reports:
Oakland Police Spokeswoman Johnna Watson said there was some type of argument that ensued during the production and that shots were exchanged between multiple individuals.
Watson said investigators were looking for multiple suspects.
An employee at a nearby restaurant said he heard around 30 to 40 gunshots at around 6 p.m. but did not see the shooter or shooters. The restaurant worker said he was shocked by tonight's violence.
"It used to be peaceful around here," he said.
Police are asking anyone with information to call the department's Major Crimes Unit at (510) 238-3821.
