Oakland Schools Asked To Make Cuts

OAKLAND (KCBS) – Administrators in the Oakland School District are asking campus principals to cut fifteen percent from their budgets.

Despite Governor Jerry Brown's vow to not make cuts in K-12 funding, much of his plan is based on ballot measures that the voters must pass to make temporary tax increases permanent.

KCBS' Bob Melrose Reports:

Oakland School District Budget Director Artise Hardy said the governor's message was mixed.

"What the governor actually said is that roughly about $2.1 billion will be deferred from the 2011-12 proposed budget," said Hardy. "In addition, he has said that his plan to keep constant school funding is contingent upon a special election that will be held in June."

Hardy said she'll be talking to the principals, but vows not to gut the schools.
