Oakland Police Officer Opens Fire After Man Allegedly Points Shotgun

OAKLAND (CBS SF) - A man who aimed a shotgun at an Oakland police officer Thursday night, prompting the officer to open fire, has been taken into custody, police said.

Shortly after 8 p.m. two officers stopped two men in a car near 67th and Bancroft avenues for a vehicle code violation, according to a statement by Oakland Police.

One of the men fled on foot and one officer chased him. Police said the suspect, identified as 19-year-old Oakland resident Tyrell Coulter, pulled out a concealed shotgun and pointed it in the officer's direction.

The officer drew his gun and fired several shots which missed Coulter, according to police.

Coulter fled into a nearby yard and after an extensive search was conducted and he was found and arrested, according to police.

Neither officer was hurt during the incident. Police said the suspect's shotgun was recovered at the scene.

Coulter was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer and gun possession charges.
