OAKLAND (CBS SF) -- In an unusual move, an Oakland man has surrendered to police for the fatal shooting of a 21-year-old woman two weeks ago.

Oakland police said Larry Alford, 21, walked into police headquarters about 5:15 p.m. Wednesday to turn himself in for the homicide of Demetria Spears at an apartment complex in the 1900 block of 85th Avenue about 9:35 p.m. on Aug. 25.

Spears' 14-year-old male cousin was wounded in the incident and was still hospitalized.

Oakland police spokeswoman Johnna Watson said Alford surrendered after investigators had spent hours talking to his wife, other family members and his teachers at a local college.

Watson said it was "unique" for Alford to self-surrender and investigators are thankful to his wife, family and teachers for helping to persuade him to do so.

Alford was scheduled to be arraigned at the Wiley Manuel Courthouse at 2 p.m. Friday.
