NorCal Man Shoots, Kills Girlfriend After Mistaking Her For Intruder

NATOMAS, Sacramento County (CBS SF) - A Sacramento area woman has died after her boyfriend says he accidentally shot her early Monday morning, according to officials.

The shooting took place at a home in the community of Natomas around 5:30 Monday morning.

Police said the man told them he accidentally shot his girlfriend.

"The caller called in and said that he just shot his girlfriend," said Sacramento Police Officer Michele Gigante. "What he stated was that he thought it was an intruder."

The 34-year-old woman was shot in the stomach. She was taken to the hospital where she was pronounced dead.

"He heard a scream and saw a silhouette in his bedroom area hallway and retrieved a weapon and discharged it," said Sacramento Police Sgt. Elmer Marzan. "He's very distraught, very shaken about the whole event."

Police told CBS13 Sacramento that the woman shot and killed has had a problem with a previous boyfriend.

"There was an issue regarding her past relationships about an ex-boyfriend that may have been stalking her." Said Sgt. Marzan.

Investigators were looking into where that contributed to the shooter thinking there was an intruder.

"It's a sad set of circumstances," said Officer Gigante. "It's a tragic situation."

At of Monday afternoon, police were not looking at charging the man and were investigating this as an accidental shooting.
