New Wireless Technology Promises Broadband On Any Mobile Device

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - It sounds too good to be true: a wireless data connection as fast as any broadband connection, available on any mobile device. And oh by the way, no dropouts.

But San Francisco-based Artemis Networks says it already has the technology up and running at its Bryant Street headquarters and hopes to have it widely-deployed in San Francisco by the end of 2014.

Artemis Networks founder and CEO Steve Perlman says the secret is something called a pCell, which allows the existing cellular networks to serve more users with faster connections than current technology permits.

The pCell approach combines radio signals from mulitple base stations so that cellular data users have full use of the available spectrum. Current technology requires users to share the bandwidth of a given cell site. That can slow data to a crawl when many users are near each other.
