New Study Rates Bay Area Kids' Well-Being

New research offers a county-to-county snapshot of how Bay Area kids are doing. It's called the 2010 California County Scorecard of Children's Well-being.

"This is for parents, city and county officials, child welfare workers, health workers," said Jessica Mindnich, associate director of research with Children Now, the Oakland non-profit organization that conducted the research. Mindnich says the Scorecard covers some basic issues.

KCBS Melissa Culross Reporting:

"We wanted to tap into health, education, and safety," said Mindnich. "Some of these constructs are definitely reflected in indicators such as children who have health insurance, young children who are read to often, and children who are safe on and around roads- children who can walk around their neighborhoods."

The scorecard evaluates each county, as well as comparing counties of similar population and income to each other so that officials can learn what may work best when it comes to taking
care of kids.
