(CBS SF) – An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.6 struck the Pacific coast of southern Mexico Thursday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The earthquake struck about 1:49 p.m. local time (11:49 a.m. Pacific) near the town of Tres Picos in the Mexican state of Chiapas, about 560 miles southeast of Mexico City and 214 miles northwest of Guatemala City, Guatemala.

According to a statement from the National Tsunami Warning Center, a tsunami is not expected based on the depth of the earthquake.
