The six-year-old Castro Valley boy was swimming at the Castro Valley High School Swim Center during public swim Monday afternoon, when one of the three lifeguards on duty noticed the boy at the bottom of one of the two pools.
The lifeguards performed CPR, and called 911, but the boy died later at the hospital. It's the first drowning in the 65-year history of the Hayward Area Recreation and Park District, which operates the pools.
"We are devastated and we're working with the staff, the lifeguards at providing them with counseling, and obviously our hearts go out to the family because it's a terrible tragedy," said General Manager Rita Shue.
She says investigators are still trying to determine what happened. She doesn't know yet if the boy was with his family, or a group.
The pool has reopened, even as investigators keep working to sort out the tragedy, and make sure there was no foul play involved.
