Highway 1 Section To Close Indefinitely After Big Sur Slide

BIG SUR (CBS/AP) - Engineers assessing damage to a section of the Pacific Coast Highway that collapsed north of Big Sur said the popular roadway will remain closed for at least a month until temporary repairs are finished.

The California Department of Transportation said an emergency contractor would begin work Friday on the two-mile stretch of Highway 1 between Carmel and Big Sur.

Department spokeswoman Susana Cruz said damage to the road that crumbled into the ocean Wednesday extends at least 150 feet. Cruz says 700 feet in all are being monitored for instability.

The closure cuts off access from the north to many of the Big Sur region's popular tourist destinations.

Travelers are advised to take inland Highway 101 to Highway 46 to access Big Sur from the south.
