Gunman Shoots Several Times Into Occupied Novato Home

NOVATO (CBS SF) -- Novato police believe someone willfully fired bullets into an inhabited residence on Robinhood Drive in an affluent area of east Novato Wednesday evening.

Lt. John McCarthy said "in excess of 10 shots" were fired into the hilltop house around 6:40 p.m.

Two women inside a living room area were not injured, and a man who also lived there was not home at the time, McCarthy said.

Police recovered some bullets from inside the house, McCarthy said.

Police searched the hillside until dark Wednesday and again Thursday, McCarthy said.

No one was seen in the area at the time of the shooting but someone reported seeing a black van, McCarthy said.

A police dog tracked a human scent to a curb, suggesting the shooter left in a vehicle, McCarthy said.

The house sits above state Highway 37 and other homes are close by, McCarthy said.

Police occasionally receive reports about someone shooting deer in the open space area, but in this instance, bullets were ricocheting inside the residence, McCarthy said.

The two female residents said they can't image why someone shot into the house, McCarthy said.

"We're still trying to figure it out," he said.
