Around 10:00 Wednesday evening, 61-year-old Robert Lee Turner allegedly stabbed an unidentified 48-year-old woman in his apartment complex, and then when she went for help next door, police say Turner shot his neighbor 48-year-old Verna Lisa Hollins, who later died.

Her husband John blames police, for not allowing paramedics to respond.

"I told them he's not shooting now, he's in the house, come get us, or let us bring her down, and he said to get in the house," said Hollins.

But San Jose Police Spokesman Jose Garcia says officers did attempt a rescue at 10:13 p.m.

"As they approached the apartment the suspect exited his apartment, number 12, so the officers were forced to divert from the rescue attempt and address him," said Garcia.

Only after the suspect was taken into custody, and his apartment cleared, were paramedics allowed to respond. The woman who was stabbed was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

There's no word on what sparked this deadly violence. Neighbors say Turner rarely spoke to anyone, and lived like a hermit.
