Latest Killings In San Jose Push Homicides Beyond 2010 Levels

SAN JOSE (CBS / AP) -- Two more homicides over the weekend in San Jose bring the number of killings so far this year to 22, more than in all of last year.

KCBS' Tim Ryan Reports:

A 35-year-old San Jose woman died in a shooting after police found her in the driver's seat of a black Mercedes sedan in the 4000 block of Ambler Way at about 10:30 p.m., San Jose police said.

CPR was performed on the victim, but she died at the scene, he said. It appeared that she had been shot in the car.

At about 11 p.m., the woman's 20-year-old nephew arrived at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center with gunshot wounds that were not life threatening. He was with his aunt when he was shot in the hip. He ran from the scene, before taking himself to the hospital.

The man told hospital employees that he had been shot in the same area where police found the woman, he said.

The man was treated and released from the hospital and was interviewed by police, Garcia said.

Officers originally responded to the area after receiving calls of an argument and then reports of multiple gunshots, Garcia said.

Investigators are working to determine possible suspects or motives for the fatal shooting.

Investigators are working to determine possible suspects or motives for the fatal shooting. They have not indicated if the incident was gang related, but family members said that would be impossible.

"The San Jose Police Department has one of the highest solve-rates in the country when it comes to homicides," said Mayor Chuck Reed. "They'll catch the bad guys and put them in jail, and the district attorney will prosecute them."

Reed said that it's easier for police to reduce gang killings than it is say, domestic violence murders. He added that hard economic times mean fewer police officers on the street.

Meanwhile, an 18-year-old man who was stabbed to death early Saturday in San Jose during a gang-related altercation has been identified by police today as Vincent Tran.

Officers found the San Jose man at about 4 a.m. in the 1700 block of Schulte Drive. He had been stabbed.

Tran was taken to Regional Medical Center in San Jose and pronounced dead a few hours later.

An investigation revealed Tran was stabbed during an altercation between two local rival gangs. Gang-related slogans and hand gestures were exchanged, witnesses told police, during and before the altercation.

Police believe Tran was friends with members of one of the involved gangs. The degree of his involvement remains under investigation.

The investigation also reveled Tran also had been stabbed during a similar gang-related altercation May 1 in the same area as this more recent stabbing took place.

It is unknown whether Tran was targeted. The motive for the altercation remains under investigation.

No arrests have been made. It was the city's 21st homicide this year.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Detective Sgt. Rafael Nieves or Detective Glenn Albin in the San Jose police homicide unit at (408) 277-5283.
