OAKLAND (BCN) - A 17-year-old student at Oakland's Life Academy of Health and Bioscience was killed in a shooting on Tuesday evening, police and school officials said Wednesday.

At about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, officers responded to reports of shots fired in the 1200 block of MacArthur Boulevard in Oakland.

The boy, an Oakland resident, was found wounded by gunfire and taken to a hospital where he later died, police said.

His name was not yet being released, police Officer Holly Joshi said.

No arrests have been made in connection with the shooting, Joshi said.

The boy was a student at Life Academy and had previously attended Oakland High School, said Troy Flint, spokesman for the Oakland Unified School District.

Students at Life Academy were grieving the loss Wednesday, principal Preston Thomas said.

The school, which only has about 250 students, held an assembly Wednesday morning to address the death, and brought grief counselors and other staff to talk to the students in small groups, Thomas said.

The boy had just started his junior year, his first at the school, and "was trying to get a fresh start" at Life Academy, Thomas said.

Although he was new to the school, many of the students had gone to elementary school with him, he said.

"It's had a pretty strong impact on the kids," Thomas said. "One of the things we pride ourselves in is being a small family. He was the newest member of the family, but it doesn't make it any easier."
