UPDATE: Alleged Gunman Killed In Deputy-Involved Shooting Inside Discovery Bay Gated Community
DISCOVERY BAY (CBS SF) -- Contra Costa County sheriff's deputies responding to a domestic dispute call in Discovery Bay late Tuesday night fatally shot a suspect who allegedly pointed a rifle at them.
"Deputy Sheriffs were handling a domestic situation when a subject with a weapon came at them forcing deputies to discharge their firearms," the sheriff's department tweeted.
The department also tweeted a photo of the weapon, but have released few other details.
According to the sheriff's officials, deputies were dispatched to a domestic disturbance at a residence on the 8000 block of Westport Circle in Discovery Bay at about 8:44 p.m.
After speaking to the caller, a deputy attempted to talk to man, later identified as 51-yearold Robert Jones, who was in the residence. As deputies tried to speak to him through a screen door, he took out a knife and raised it over his head.
Deputies commanded Jones to drop the knife. He then brandished what appeared to be a rifle at the deputies, who retreated to safe distance away from the residence to set up a perimeter.
A short while later, as other deputies and Oakley police officers arrived on the scene, Jones came out of the residence with the weapon
raised and pointed as he walked toward the deputies and officers on the street. They attempted to deescalate the situation by giving him numerous commands to put his weapon down.
A neighbor told KPIX 5 that he heard deputies repeatedly order the suspect to put the gun down before the shots rang out.
"What we heard was. 'Get off the sidewalk! Get off the sidewalk! Put your gun down!'" the neighbor said. "And then, it sounded like to me 5 to 9 shots. Bam, bam, bam, bam -- real quick. All the neighbors, you can see, we all ran out [of our houses]. We are just concerned, we don't know if it's one of us (a neighborhood resident)."
Jones refused to comply and advanced on the deputies and officers who discharged their firearms, striking him. They immediately requested an ambulance and the fire department to respond and began performing life-saving measures.
He was transported to a local hospital where Jones later succumbed to his wounds.
Investigators said the weapon Jones was carrying and pointed at law enforcement officers was a Umarex AirJavelin Archery Rifle that propels arrows up to 300 feet per second.
The shooting has left the residents of the gated community shaken.
"It's scary, I have a 13-year-old and a 20-year-old and I'm almost 50 years old, you just don't think something like this is going to happen in your neighborhood," he said.
The county's officer-involved shooting investigation protocol has been invoked. Oakley police officers may also be involved.
