Deputies Shoot, Kill Woman In Unincorporated San Jose

SAN JOSE (CBS SF) -- A woman armed with an unspecified weapon was shot and killed after confronting sheriff's deputies in the driveway of a home in unincorporated San Jose early Saturday morning, a Santa Clara County sheriff's spokesman said.

Deputies responded around 12:20 a.m. to a call of a suspected burglary at a triplex in the first block of Cleveland Avenue, Sgt. Kurtis Stenderup said.

The caller reported hearing glass breaking and loud pounding noises coming from somewhere on the property, and later reported hearing a female outside yelling and banging on something, he said.

Three deputies arrived on the scene and were confronted by an armed woman in the triplex's driveway, the sergeant said.

Stenderup said Saturday morning he could not disclose what type of weapon the woman was carrying and did not know whether she was pointing it at the deputies, citing the ongoing nature of the investigation.

The deputies ordered the woman to drop the weapon, but she refused, and at least one of the deputies shot her, the sergeant said.

Emergency medical aid was given to the female but she succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

No deputies were injured in the incident.

Stenderup said sheriff's homicide investigators were at the scene overnight interviewing the deputies involved and witnesses. The Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office is monitoring the investigation.

The deputies involved in the shooting will be placed on administrative leave, following standard procedure in an officer-involved death, Stenderup said.

He said investigators were working to identify the woman as well as whether she lived at the triplex or knew someone in the building.

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident is asked to call the sheriff's office at (408) 808-4431.
