Daily Madden: Remembering Dick Williams
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - Hall of Fame baseball manager Dick Williams - who passed away Thursday in Nevada at age 82 - coached the Oakland A's in the 1970s when John Madden was coaching the Oakland Raiders.
During Friday's chat with the KCBS morning crew, Madden recalled the man he knew as a friend. "He was one of those guys who could coach anything and be successful," John said. "He was a tough guy, a little gruff, but he was brilliant."
Some players have said they feared Williams. "I think the authority figure has to have something to do with (Williams' success). Respect has something to do with it, and being real has a lot to do with," John said. "Those things don't work if you're a phony, if you don't have the knowledge and the passion and those things that Dick Williams did." (6:30)
